Art Napoleon’s powerful blend of contemporary roots music and traditional-style First Nations singing has already earned him countless award nominations, including nods from the WCMAs, the Aboriginal People’s Choice Awards, the Canadian Folk Music Awards and the Native American Music Awards.

Now with his latest release, Siskabush Tales, the one-time chief leaps squarely into contemporary country-rock territory with a fantastic new album that is sure to win over fans of Americana, country and folk. The arrangements are equal parts Blue Rodeo and Fred Eaglesmith; the deep, jagged and emotive vocals at times recall fellow West Coast songsmith Wykham Porteous, and Napoleon’s versatility as a songwriter could be likened to that of Buffy Saint-Marie.

Miyoskamin

“A potent distillation of First Nations rhythms and chants with that high lonesome northern Canadian country/folk sound.”

Stuart Derdyn, the Province, Vancouver

Described by Monday Magazine as “good music for both cowboys and Indians”, Napoleon’s second CD is available through www.pacificmusic.net catalog # PM21195. Guests on the bilingual disc include Sandy Scofield and Marty Jones on harmony vocals, fiddler Calvin Cairns (Triska), Frank Tobin (Spirit of the West) and blues troubadour Ken Hamm.

Miyoskamin has been nominated for several Canadian and international music awards and was one of the top played albums on the CBC Galaxy Folk/Roots channel in 2006.

Outta the woods

Art’s first full-length CD is a blend of country and rock influenced roots music that incorporates tribal chants and rhythms. Napoleon experimented with a full band sound using only one other primary musician. It was recorded in the dead of winter at Moberly Sound Studio, a tiny one room shack in remote Northern BC.

Listeners who appreciate the soulful folk-roots music of Bill Miller or the earthy sounds of Kashtin will like this recording from the trap line.
